Herring Neck (aka Salt Harbour, my family refers to it as Herring Neck) is yet another picturesque community located on the NorthEast coast of Newfoundland and Labrador. It has all of the common characteristics of communities scattered along the coast; a rugged coastline, spectacular ocean sunsets, friendly people, a rich fishing history, and an incredible iceberg season from May until July.

​The hike to the Top of Herring Neck is more of walk (see map below), and it is not an official trail, it is a walk that I have been doing for about 35 years. My mother grew up in one of the white houses seen in the photo immediately below. Our family would spend about 2 weeks there every summer during my school age years; the time was spent visiting friends/family in Herring Neck and surrounding areas, taking in the Twillingate Fish Fun and Folk Festival, and walking the local trails. The walk is less than 10 mins each way and you may have to go through someone's back yard (they won't care), the view at the top is simply spectacular.
