Hike To To The Top of Herring Neck

5/6/2018

Herring Neck (aka Salt Harbour, my family refers to it as Herring Neck) is yet another picturesque community located on the NorthEast coast of Newfoundland and Labrador. It has all of the common characteristics of communities scattered along the coast; a rugged coastline, spectacular ocean sunsets, friendly people, a rich fishing history, and an incredible iceberg season from May until July.

The hike to the Top of Herring Neck is more of walk (see map below), and it is not an official trail, it is a walk that I have been doing for about 35 years. My mother grew up in one of the white houses seen in the photo immediately below. Our family would spend about 2 weeks there every summer during my school age years; the time was spent visiting friends/family in Herring Neck and surrounding areas, taking in the Twillingate Fish Fun and Folk Festival, and walking the local trails. The walk is less than 10 mins each way and you may have to go through someone's back yard (they won't care), the view at the top is simply spectacular.

The spectacular view at the Top of Herring Neck. This photo was taken during the summer of 2017; it has a place in my memory of my favourite landscape photo of the year.

My mother's house that she grew up in is the taller one on the left side of the sun. I have many great memories of spending time here as a kid. The trail is to the right of where this photo was taken, vehicles can park anywhere along here.

The trail is staring to get overgrown with small trees but is still manageable.

The view looking back about half way's up to the end of the trail.

We are staying at Evelyns Place (Salt Box Co accommodation) in Herring Neck at the end of the week. I found this trail, callahans trail, and trail to top of twillingate. Your site was very helpful. Thank You. You have my email. If you see this in time and would like to suggest any other areas or sights, I’d love to hear from you!

Excellent! Every summer as a kid I would spend two weeks in the Herring Neck/Twillingate area, absolutely loved it! My grandmothers house was near the Callahan hiking trail; on the left side walking down to the trail there is the graveyard, then a house (Uncle Doug), and then my grandmothers. It was sold some years ago and is not a Bed and Breakfast. I am not aware of any more trails in the Herring Neck area, it Twillingate I would recommend Spillar's Cove Trail to French Beach and anything in the lighthouse area. Hope this helps!!
